Comanche Ways
Dustin has just finished a new sculpture of the historical Texas Rangers. Now available to order in pre-cast, this piece measures approximately 16"H x 17"W x 6"D and is a limited edition of 20 in bronze.
We are excited about this new action piece from the mid 1800's time-period and the Paterson Colt Revolver that was used by the early Texas Rangers.
The early day Texas Ranger had the task of defending the new Settlers that were migrating into Texas in search of land and the promise of a better life. In the beginning, they were armed with their single shot pistols, a flintlock rifle, and bowie knife. It proved tough to survive when in a scrap with the feared Comanche warriors who were superior in horseback warfare. The Rangers would dismount, fire, and then have to reload. During this time, a Comanche warrior could release a stream of arrows while horseback. In order to survive, the Rangers would have to adapt and learn from their foes.
In 1836, a man named Samuel Colt patented the first revolving pistol. This new invention became known as the Paterson Colt Revolver, and with it started the evolution of the legendary Colt Revolvers that are still used today. By 1844, a number of these first revolvers had made their way into the hands of some Rangers struggling in the defense of the Texas frontier. Captain John Coffee Hays and his band of volunteer soldiers were the first group of Rangers to get a hold of these revolvers. It is told that they trained to fight like Comanches, being able to fire these revolvers at full speed, where they would throw themselves on the side of their horse with only a foot and hand left visible.
The Hays Rangers with their new five shot revolvers and improved horsemanship soon would become feared far and wide by the Comanche Nation. The development of the legendary police force was well on its way. There are few law enforcement organizations that are as revered as much as the Texas Rangers, and the spirit of the early Rangers is still distinguishable today.
